Trauma

Trauma hypnotherapy Newcastle

Emotional and psychological trauma occurs when out of the ordinary stressful events obliterate a person’s sense of safety. Psychological trauma leaves a person struggling with erratic feelings (anxiety and anger), stressful memories and unpleasant physical sensations. Trauma may also leave a person feeling numb, disconnected, spaced-out and unable to trust themselves, situations or others.

We help you regain Control of Your Life!

Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapy for trauma is based on Trauma focused CBT and Inner-child/Parts therapy. The combination allows for a full suite of tools to address at the aspects of trauma.

Trauma Focused CBT(TF-CBT) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy. It helps people process traumatic memories and reduce the painful symptoms of PTSD. The process involves identifying negative thought patterns in the present that are about present as well as the events in the past. We would then challenge the related unhelpful beliefs around anxiety, anger, guilt or helplessness. Then, using exposure techniques, we would desensitise you to triggers. Hypnosis is used to facilitate these changes as well as for relaxing and grounding.

Effectiveness

CBT is highly effective in reducing PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. The goal is to break the link between trauma, negative thoughts, and avoidance behaviour, allowing individuals to regain control of their lives

More about trauma

The experiences that cause trauma often come in the form of a threat to life or a perceived threat to life. However, any situation that leaves a person totally overwhelmed, out of control and isolated can result in trauma. Experiences don’t need to be about safety to the physical body, as in emotional abuse.

It’s not the circumstances of the experience alone that determines whether an event results in trauma, but the perceived threat or danger causing a subjective terrifying emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and out-of-control a person feels, the more likely they are to be traumatized.

Trauma can be categorized as acute, complex, or secondary.

Acute trauma is the result of one single, short-term incident that activates your fight or flight like a car accident.

Complex trauma happens due to repeated exposure to various types of traumatic events, such as growing up in a home where verbal abuse and physical assaults are common.

Secondary trauma occurs when you experience distress after hearing about another person’s horrific experience. For instance, an aid worker experiencing  trauma while helping survivors of a natural disaster or war.

Sudden horrific events, such as an accident, injury, sexual abuse, or a violent attack, especially if it was unexpected or happened in childhood.

Long-term stressors, such as living in a crime-ridden neighborhood, battling a life-threatening illness, or experiencing traumatic events that occur repeatedly, such as bullying, domestic violence, or childhood neglect and emotional abuse.

Commonly overlooked causes, such as surgery (especially in the first 3 years of life), the sudden death of someone close, the breakup of a significant relationship, or a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience, especially if someone was deliberately cruel.
